Chapter 7: The Lower Aqueducts
The violet flame dancing across Robin’s delicate fingertips illuminated the mausoleum in bruised, shifting light. Kaelen stared at the boy, his gaze traveling from the flickering shadow-fire down the impossible plunge of the "Widow’s Web" bodysuit, lingering on the pale, rounded swell of Robin’s hips, and finally snapping to the dark, intricate rune now branded into the porcelain skin of his neck.
Kaelen’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked beneath his stubble. The mercenary didn't sheath his claymore; he dropped it. The heavy steel clanged against the stone as Kaelen closed the distance between them in three massive strides.
"An Umbraqui," Kaelen growled, his voice vibrating with a dangerous mix of possessive fury and primal lust. He planted his large, calloused hands flat on the altar on either side of Robin’s thighs, trapping the boy. "I take my eyes off you for one minute, and a Dark Elf makes a meal of you."
Robin looked up through his thick, silver lashes. His body still hummed with the cold, abyssal power of the elf, but the moment Kaelen loomed over him—smelling of sweat, leather, and warm human vitality—his core melted into a familiar, heated submission.
"He ambushed us," Robin murmured softly, his voice carrying a new, hypnotic resonance. He reached up, his small, smooth hands resting on Kaelen’s broad, scarred chest. "He put you to sleep. But he didn't hurt me, Kaelen. He... fed me. And he gave us a way past the Gorgon's brood blocking the eastern pass."
"He marked you," Kaelen hissed. He leaned in, his nose brushing against the elven rune on Robin’s neck. The mercenary inhaled sharply, his chest heaving against Robin's soft palms. "You smell like him. Like cold iron and nightshade."
Kaelen’s hand moved from the altar to Robin’s waist, his thick fingers digging possessively into the boy’s soft, yielding flesh through the sheer black netting. He hauled Robin flush against his armored body. Robin let out a high, breathy gasp as Kaelen’s mouth crashed down onto his neck—on the opposite side of the elven rune.
The mercenary bit down, not hard enough to break the skin, but hard enough to leave a deep, blooming bruise. He sucked a heavy mark into the pale flesh, a rugged, human brand to counter the elegant elven magic. Robin’s back arched, a whimper escaping his lips as the sheer, overwhelming masculinity of Kaelen washed over him, anchoring his volatile new magic.
"You belong to me," Kaelen muttered roughly against Robin’s skin. "Shadow magic or not. You're my little bird."
"I know," Robin breathed, his fingers tangling in Kaelen’s dark hair, his hips instinctively grinding forward against the mercenary's hardened form. "I’m yours. Lead the way."
Vaelith’s advice led them to a crumbling stone stairwell hidden beneath a collapsed statue of a forgotten goddess. The descent took them deep into the earth, into the ancient Lower Aqueducts of the Hollowed Span. The air here was damp, heavy, and echoed with the ceaseless drip of subterranean water.
The shadows were oppressive, but Robin found that he no longer feared them. The rune on his neck pulsed faintly, allowing his eyes to pierce the gloom with a violet tint.
Given the damp environment, Robin accessed his Infinite Wardrobe. The black spider-silk melted away in a shower of dark sparks. In its place, he summoned the "Abyssal Pearl Bodice and Skirt." The top was a corset of shimmering, iridescent scales—like mother-of-pearl—that cinched his narrow waist tight and pushed up his chest, leaving his shoulders and back entirely bare. The bottom was a sheer, flowing wrap-skirt made of sea-foam silk that fell to his ankles but parted completely at the sides, revealing the full length of his smooth, creamy legs and the enticing curve of his ass with every step. He paired it with delicate, strappy sandals that made almost no sound on the wet stone.
Kaelen walked ahead, a torch in his left hand and his claymore in his right, though he glanced back frequently, his eyes inevitably drawn to the hypnotic sway of Robin's hips in the sheer skirt.
"These tunnels were built in the First Era," Kaelen said, his voice hushed in the cavernous space. "Designed to funnel water from the Cloud-Piercer Peaks to the ancient empires. If the elf told the truth, this will dump us right on the border of the Blood-Plains, near the Vampire Citadels."
"It feels alive down here," Robin whispered. He raised his hand, summoning a wisp of magic. But instead of the gentle golden light from before, a ribbon of pure violet shadow-fire coiled around his fingers. He focused, thinking of Kaelen’s warm, burning passion from the night before. Slowly, a streak of gold intertwined with the violet, creating a breathtaking, dual-toned flame.
He was a Nexus. He wasn't just hoarding magic; he was synthesizing it.
Suddenly, the water in the central canal beside them began to churn. The rhythmic dripping was drowned out by a sickening, wet slithering sound.
"Back against the wall!" Kaelen barked, dropping the torch and taking a two-handed grip on his massive sword.
From the black water erupted an Aqueduct Crawler—a monstrous amalgamation of a centipede and a blind cave-drake. It was forty feet long, armored in pale, translucent chitin, with a maw full of needle-sharp, dripping fangs. It lacked eyes, hunting purely by sound and magical resonance.
The beast lunged at Kaelen, its massive jaws snapping shut just inches from the mercenary’s face as he dodged, bringing his claymore down in a punishing arc. The steel bit deep into the creature's shell, spilling glowing, acidic green blood that hissed against the stone.
The Crawler shrieked, whipping its heavy, plated tail around in a blind arc. The impact caught Kaelen in the chest, sending the massive man flying backward into a stone pillar with a sickening crunch.
"Kaelen!" Robin screamed.
The beast, sensing the massive spike in Robin’s magical aura, turned its eyeless head toward the delicate boy in the shimmering skirt. It slithered forward, towering over him, acid dripping from its jaws.
Robin didn't freeze. The submissive boy who had trembled in the Whispering Weald was gone, replaced by something beautiful and deadly. He felt the dual energies warring in his veins—Kaelen’s rugged, golden warmth and Vaelith’s cold, abyssal shadow.
Blend them, his instincts whispered.
Robin stepped forward, his bare thigh exposed as the sea-foam silk billowed around him. He raised both hands, his large eyes glowing with an otherworldly, bi-colored light.
"Burn," Robin commanded, his voice echoing with dual timbres.
He thrust his palms forward. A torrent of magic erupted from him—a spiraling vortex of golden Spellfire and violet Umbra-flame. The blast hit the cavernous ceiling and angled down, crashing into the Crawler with the force of a falling star. The shadow magic instantly froze the creature's chitinous armor, making it brittle, while the golden fire detonated within it.
The Crawler exploded into chunks of smoking, frozen meat and glowing acid.
Robin dropped to his knees, gasping for breath, the iridescent scales of his corset heaving. The sheer output of magic left him trembling, his thighs quivering on the wet stone.
Kaelen groaned, pulling himself up from the base of the pillar. He clutched his ribs, limping over to where Robin knelt. The mercenary looked at the decimated monster, and then down at the breathtaking, terrifying femboy who had just obliterated it.
Kaelen dropped to his knees, pulling Robin into his lap. He didn't care about the slime or the damp stone. He crushed his mouth against Robin’s, a desperate, deeply relieved kiss that tasted of iron and smoke. Robin melted into him, wrapping his arms around the mercenary's thick neck, instantly reverting from a force of destruction back to Kaelen’s soft, cherished prize.
"We make a good team," Robin breathed against Kaelen's lips, a coy smile playing on his soft features.
"You're going to give me a heart attack before I hit forty, little bird," Kaelen chuckled, a rough, wet sound, resting his forehead against Robin's.
Together, they stood, leaning on each other. Ahead of them, the heavy darkness of the aqueduct began to thin, replaced by a strange, crimson glow. The exit was near. The lands of the ancient vampires awaited, and Robin’s appetite for power had only just been whetted.
Emerging from the Hollowed Span, Kaelen and Robin find themselves on the borders of the Blood-Plains, only to be intercepted by a patrol of the Royal Aegis—the elite human knights who guard the frontiers against vampire incursions. Robin meets Seraphina, a towering, fiercely honorable female knight clad in gold-etched plate armor. Intrigued by the delicate boy's potent aura and scandalous beauty, Seraphina decides to take them into "custody." The dynamic shifts as Robin discovers that women, too, can fuel his ascension, setting the stage for a deeply sensual and powerful new dynamic as a triad begins to form.
